2nd Marine Raider Battalion (1-2 p55-57)

19 Feb 42

2nd Separate Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, designated as the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion (composed of HQ, A, B, C and D Companies), Amphibious Force, Pacific Fleet, at Camp Elliott,(Jacques farm), San Diego, CA.

25 Mar to 18 Apr 42

Amphibious training exercises aboard the USS Calhoun (APD-2), Gregory (APD-3) and the Little (APD-4), at San Clemente Islands.

l Apr 42

Designation of Amphibious Force, Pacific Fleet, changed to Amphibious Corps, Pacific Fleet.

14 Apr 42

E and F Companies, 2nd Marine Raider Battalion,organized at Camp Elliott, San Diego, CA.

8 May 42

Battalion embarked aboard the USS J. Franklin Bell (APA-16), at San Diego, CA., and sailed, arriving at Pearl Harbor, T.H. At Camp Catlin, 18 May 42.

21 May 42

C and D Companies embarked aboard the USS Gwin (DD-433), the USS Case (DD-370) and the USS St. Louis (CL-49), at Pearl Harbor, sailed, arrived on 25 May  42, and disembarked at Midway Island.

Sea and air battles of Midway Island.

1-15 Jun 42

D Company stationed on North Island, and C Company stationed on Sand Island, during the battles.

16 Jun 42 

C and D Companies embarked aboard tie USS Regulus (AK-14), at Midway  Island, sailed, arriving at Pearl Harbor on 2l Jun 42. To Camp Catlin.

2l Jun 42

HQ, A, B, E and F Companies embarked aboard and sailed on the USS Calhoun (APD-2), Gregory (APD-3), Little (APD-4) and the USS Mc Kean (APD-5) for amphibious training at the Midway Islands, arriving there on 26 Jun 42.

 

30 Jun 42

Departed Midway Islands, and arrived at Pearl Harbor on 4 Jul 42. Battalion to Camp Catlin.

9 Aug 42

A and B Companies, embarked at Pearl Harbor aboard the submarines SS Argonaut (SS-166) and the Nautilus (SS-168), and sailed.

Assault landing on Butaritari Island, Makin Atoll, Gilbert Islands.

18 Aug 42

A and B Companies embarked aboard the submarines at Butaritari Makin Atoll, and sailed. 25 Aug 42 arrived at Pearl Harbor.

6 Sep 42

Battalion embarked aboard the USS Warton (AP-7) at Pearl Harbor, sailed, and arrived at Espiritu Santo Island, New Hebrides Islands, on 12 Sep 42.

30 Oct 42

C Company conducted a reconnaissance patrol on Duduba Island, New Hebrides Islands.

The Battalion (minus A Company) embarked at Espiritu Santo Island, New Hebrides Islands, aboard the USS Manley (APD-1), Mc Kean (APD-5) and the USS Southard (DMS-10), sailed and on 4 Nov 42 executed an.  Assault landing at Aola Bay, Guadalcanal, British Solomon Islands.

Thirty day guerrilla-mission begins on Guadalcanal.

Reko Mission ambush.

B, D and F Companies landed at Tasimboko and joined C and E Companies

Battle of Asamana E, C and D Companies.

F Company destroyed 15 man Japanese detachment near Binu.

E Company patrol reaches upper Tenaru river, establishes base for systematic patrolling of area.

A Company arrived and joined the Battalion.

Upper Lunga River battle.

Mt. Austen (Mambulu Ridge) battle.

Battalion enters Marine perimeter at Henderson field.

15 Dec 42

Battalion withdrawn from combat zone. Embarked aboard the USS Neville (APA-9), at Lunga Point, Guadalcanal, BSI., sailed, disembarked at Espiritu Santo Island, New Hebrides. In camp Gung Ho.

4 Feb 43

Battalion sailed aboard the USS Henry T. Allen (APA-15) from Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides, arrived at Wellington, NZ, for rest and rehabilitation on 9 Feb 42.

17 Feb 43

Battalion embarked and sailed from Wellington, NZ, aboard the USS George Clymer (APA-27), disembarked at Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides on 23 Feb 43.

15 Mar 43

1st Marine Raider Regiment organized on Espiritu Santo Island, New Hebrides Islands. Regiment composed of H&S Company, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and the 4th Raider Battalions.

27 Mar 43

Designation of 2nd Raider Battalion, 1st Marine Amphibious Corps, changed to 2nd Raider Battalion, 1st Marine Raider Regiment.

5 Apr 43

A Company disbanded.  B Company designated as E Company. C Company designated as F Company D Company Designated as G Company   E Company designated as H Company.  F Company disbanded.

22 Apr 43

Battalion embarked aboard the USS Del Brasil at Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides, sailed, and disembarked, on 28 Apr 43, at Noumea, New Caledonia. In camp at Mission St. Louis, Camp Allard.

l2 Sep 43

Designation of 2nd Raider Battalion, 1st Marine Raider Regiment, changed to 2nd   Raider Battalion, 2nd Marine Raider regiment, (Provisional), 1st Marine Amphibious Corps.

4 Oct 43

Battalion embarked aboard the USS President Hayes (APA-21), Nournea, New Caledonia, sailed, and arrived and disembarked at Guadalcanal, BSI., on l1 Oct 43.

13 Oct 43

Battalion embarked aboard the USS George Clymer (APA-27), sailed, arrived at Efate, New Hebrides Islands, and conducted pre-invasion landing rehearsals from 16 to 22 Oct 43.

23-27 Oct 43

Anchored at Espiritu Santo, harbor.

30 Oct 43

Arrived and sailed from Guadalcanal, BSI.

Assault landing at Cape Torokina, Empress Augusta Bay, Bougainville, BSI. Battalion landed on Green beach #1, at 0730.

Battle of Piva Trail.

13 Nov 43

Battle of Coconut Grove.

19 Nov 43

Battle of  Numa Numa Trail (Piva Forks)

Battalion withdrawn from combat zone. Embarked aboard the USS President Hayes (APA-21), at Cape Torokina, Bougainville, BSI., sailed, and debarked at Tassafaronga, Guadalcanal, BSI., on 14 Jan 44.

26 Jan 44

Designation of 2nd Raider Battalion, 2nd Marine Raider Regiment, (Provisional), 1st Marine Amphibious Corps, changed to 2nd Raider Battalion, 1st Marine Raider Regiment, 1st Marine Amphibious Corps.

l Feb 44

2nd Raider Battalion disbanded.
